Urge Waltham Forest Council to review Leyton High Road traffic calming measures.
The Issue
As a local resident, I have experienced firsthand the terrifying reality of speeding cars on Leyton High Road. Transport for London (TfL) buses, and other speeding vehicles failing to stop at zebra crossings on Leyton High Road—even when pedestrians are already halfway across.
Just recently, there was a tragic, fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a car near Millais Road where we live. This area is a bustling hub of daily activity, and the current traffic calming measures on Leyton High Road are simply inadequate to protect the people who live and work here.
The road is a major thoroughfare for the entire community, bordered by local businesses, busy transport links, schools, nurseries and playgrounds at each end like Drapers Fields.
Yet, drivers consistently disregard zebra crossings, posing a constant threat to anyone attempting to cross. The recent fatality is a stark reminder of the urgent need for a total reassessment and improvement of our local traffic safety measures.
It is crucial that Waltham Forest Council takes immediate action to review and improve these measures. Installing additional traffic calming strategies—such as effective speed tables, improved signage, digital enforcement cameras, or upgraded pedestrian crossings — could greatly enhance safety and deter reckless driving before another life is lost.
Statistics consistently show that proper traffic infrastructure reduces accidents and protects both pedestrians and drivers alike. According to the UK's Department for Transport, areas with comprehensive traffic-calming measures report significantly fewer traffic-related fatalities and injuries.
We urge Waltham Forest Council to prioritise the safety of its residents and visitors by conducting a thorough and timely review of the traffic regulations on Leyton High Road. The safety of our community depends on urgent action. We cannot afford to wait for another tragic, preventable event to be the catalyst for change.
Please join me in urging the council to ensure our community's safety. Sign this petition to make Leyton High Road a safer place for everyone.
