UVA footballer, Solomon Beebe, was arrested and charged with three counts of animal cruelty after MULTIPLE incidents of him hitting and punching his pit bull while the dog cried out. This was on top of prior animal protection reports regarding the mistreatment of his dog. Despite this evidence, UVA football coach Tony Elliott states that Beebe remains part of the football program. There is no excuse for animal abuse! 

As a dedicated supporter of the University of Virginia (UVA) and its renowned football program, I find myself in an uncomfortable position. The pride and joy I have always associated with cheering for UVA are overshadowed by the unsettling knowledge that the school is condoning and funding an individual involved in the abhorrent act of animal abuse.

UVA, a celebrated institution for its commitment to ethics and education, should stand firmly against any form of cruelty—especially against defenseless animals. This is not just about a game we all love; it is about sending a strong message to the students, alumni, and supporters that brutality and abuse have no place in our community.

Dogs, known for their loyalty and companionship, deserve protection and respect. There is irrefutable evidence that animal cruelty is linked to broader social violence, as highlighted by various studies and animal welfare organizations. By associating with individuals who disregard the welfare of animals, UVA risks tarnishing its respected legacy and compromising its ethical standards.

We must take actionable steps to ensure that our beloved institution upholds the values we cherish. We urge the administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and sever ties with any individuals proven to engage in such harmful practices. Furthermore, we recommend that UVA implement a strict policy against animal cruelty, offering education and awareness programs to reinforce humane treatment of animals as part of its broader educational mission.
