Westfield continues to proceed to develop the Williams Nursery into a major new housing complex to be located on property that has been soil and gravel for 100 years adjacent to Nomehegan Brook. Lenape Park was developed as a large stormwater basin and due to the extreme storms has not held with areas in Cranford and Kenilworth facing major safety issues. Yet the developer's engineer used inaccurate information without being questioned by Westfield officials. During Irene, over 13 inches of rain fell not 8. Also, the developer used outdated storm water management regulations to justify the project. Westfield has been silent on a rehearing of the project and how it could seriously impact downstream in future storms. Please contact the NJ DEP Commissioner at Shawn.Latourette@dep.nj.gov. and other state officials since it is apparent Westfield doesn't care much about what happens downstream in Cranford. During Irene over 450 first floors of homes were badly impacted. How can we achieve regional flood protection and mitigation of future extreme weather impacts if such a development proceeds?
