Urge UK supermarkets to phase out plastic chopping boards
The Issue
I’ve always been passionate about protecting the environment and maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle. However, one common household item appears to undermine both of these values: plastic chopping boards.
Plastic chopping boards are non-biodegradable and contribute to long-term plastic waste. In addition, repeated use and wear can lead to plastic particles entering food, raising growing concerns around microplastics and food safety. While research into the long-term health impacts is ongoing, emerging studies suggest microplastics are increasingly present in the human body, prompting calls for precautionary action where safer alternatives exist.
UK supermarkets are uniquely positioned to drive positive change. As major retailers, they shape consumer behaviour through the products they choose to stock and promote. By phasing out plastic chopping boards and prioritising alternatives such as bamboo, wood, or glass, supermarkets can significantly reduce plastic waste while offering customers more sustainable and durable options.
The UK produces over 5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, much of it from everyday household items. Bamboo is a fast-growing renewable resource, while wooden chopping boards are widely recognised for their durability and hygienic properties when properly maintained. Transitioning away from plastic chopping boards is, therefore, both practical and achievable.
In the modern market, consumers are increasingly seeking more sustainable products, and supermarkets that lead on this issue can strengthen their environmental credentials while aligning with wider national efforts to reduce plastic pollution.
I am calling on the major retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and other UK supermarkets to commit to phasing out plastic chopping boards and replacing them with more sustainable alternatives. This is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, reduce unnecessary plastic waste, and support healthier, more sustainable households.
Take action now. Sign this petition and urge UK supermarkets to eliminate plastic chopping boards in favour of safer, more sustainable alternatives. Your support will go a long way toward real environmental change and promote healthier choices for all households.
