The Issue
I am a Foundational Black American — a descendant of those who built, survived, and persevered in this country for generations. My family’s history is woven into the fabric of the United States, reflecting an unbroken lineage of people who endured slavery, segregation, and countless anti‑Black policies. The legacy of these systemic inequities is not a distant chapter of history; it is an ongoing reality that shapes my life, my opportunities, and the society I navigate every day.
This is why I am urging the U.S. government to take decisive action to acknowledge and address the profound impact of these historical and present‑day injustices.
First, the government must formally recognize Foundational Black Americans (FBA) as a distinct lineage group. Recognition is essential — it validates our unique history, clarifies who has been harmed, and ensures that policies meant to address that harm are directed to the correct community.
Second, the U.S. must enact a federal Anti‑Black Hate Crime Bill. Anti‑Black violence remains a persistent threat, and current laws do not adequately protect our community. A comprehensive federal bill would strengthen protections, improve reporting, and send a clear message that anti‑Black hate will not be tolerated.
Finally, we call for a national reparations program for the descendants of enslaved Black Americans. Reparations are not only about compensation — they are about acknowledging past wrongs, repairing broken systems, and investing in the future of a community that has been systematically oppressed for centuries. This is essential for healing, justice, and rebuilding trust between the government and the people whose ancestors built this nation under duress.
