Urge TTUSD to Retain Athletic Programs in NIAA

Urge TTUSD to Retain Athletic Programs in NIAA
The Issue
Our communities of Truckee and North Lake Tahoe California, are home to a remarkable concentration of student-athletes. These youths not only participate in our local school sports, but many excel in skiing and snowboarding programs as well. With TTUSD's recent decision to withdraw from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), the very foundation of our sports programs is being challenged. The community was not consulted prior to this decision, leaving students and parents frustrated and worried about the impact.
The participation in NIAA has allowed our students to compete at high levels without the additional burden of excessive travel, especially during the harsh winter months when road conditions can be dangerous. If TTUSD exits the NIAA, our multi-sport athletes might be forced to make difficult choices, possibly giving up beloved sports such as soccer to accommodate ski and snowboard commitments. The challenge doesn't end there; scholarship opportunities, which are currently attainable through visibility and competition, could severely diminish.
NIAA membership provides our athletes with regional competition exposure, benefiting their athletic and academic pursuits. The pathways to university-level participation and scholarships depend heavily on the prominence and recognition of NIAA-affiliated competitions. Withdrawing from the association risks not only the personal development of our athletes but the community’s reputation and pride.
Demanding a reconsideration of this decision ensures that the voices of the community—parents, students, and coaches—are heard and valued. Keeping our athletic programs within the NIAA is not just a choice; it’s a commitment to the future of our children.
Join us in urging the TTUSD to maintain its athletic programs within the NIAA to safeguard our students' athletic futures, promote their safety, and uphold our community's values. Please sign this petition to make a difference.
