The Issue

In 2012 the 3 storey building 145-146 High Street, Abersychan, Pontypool, NP4 7AB was set ablaze.  It has been left partially collapsed and extremely unsafe and hazardous.  In recent years it was deemed too dangerous to rebuild and new plans were submitted to demolish in June 2020.  I believe the owners went into liquidation shortly after new plans were granted. The house next door at 147 was evacuated 13 years ago and left abandoned.  It has been vandalised, set ablaze on numerous occasions and left derelict and dangerous.  These buildings have become a blight on the landscape. They not only are visibly distressing but poses a serious safety hazard. These structures have had fallen debris and been a magnet for vandalism and arson, jeopardizing the tranquillity and security of our community. A step away, the beautiful detached stone building, lovingly refurbished, making it a stunning addition to the community has also been targeted.  Children have been caught in the act many times and reports have been made to the Police, Councillors and Torfaen Council.  Efforts to fence and secure the site and buildings are being torn down, most recently a few days ago. Its only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or killed.  We need to act now!

Despite residents' growing concerns over the last few years, little has been done to address the issue. The dilapidated state of these structures not only devalues surrounding properties but also tarnishes the area's reputation. More importantly, they pose a significant risk to public safety, serving as potential venues for criminal activities and unpredictable accidents.

We call upon the Torfaen Council to act decisively and use its authority to compulsory purchase these properties. This legal tool will enable the Council to take ownership of the buildings and effectively eliminate their threat. Acquiring these properties is an essential step in paving the way for new housing, ensuring that our neighbourhood remains safe, vibrant, and prosperous.

Compulsory purchasing the derelict buildings not only rejuvenates our community visually but also economically. It prevents further vandalism, cuts down on emergency services' costs related to these run-down structures, and boosts the local economy by making the area more attractive to investors and residents alike.

The time for change is now. Let us join forces to urge Torfaen Council to compulsory purchase these neglected buildings for the betterment of Abersychan, Pontypool, and its residents. Your signature can be the catalyst for significant positive change. Please sign this petition to support a safer, cleaner, and stronger community.
