Urge the UK Government to Condemn Sri Lanka's PTA and Support Human Rights

Urge the UK Government to Condemn Sri Lanka's PTA and Support Human Rights
The Issue
Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) has caused harm to many people, especially Tamils, Muslims, journalists, and human rights defenders. The law allows for unfair arrests, detention without trial, and torture of those suspected of opposing the government. It has created a climate of fear and injustice, where people are afraid to speak out.
The PTA disproportionately targets vulnerable communities like Tamils and Muslims, who have faced discrimination in Sri Lanka for years. Many people have been detained, tortured, or even disappeared for simply expressing dissent or being involved in activism. The law has led to a widespread suppression of free speech and human rights.
Despite international calls for Sri Lanka to repeal or reform the PTA, the government has not made any significant changes. Human rights abuses continue under this law, and those who speak out are silenced or persecuted.
As a asylum seeker, I am asking the UK Government to take action and condemn the PTA. The UK has the power to pressure Sri Lanka to repeal the law and ensure human rights are respected. We need the UK to:
- Condemn the PTA and call for its repeal.
- Use diplomatic pressure to urge Sri Lanka to reform or remove the law.
- Ensure that the UK's trade and aid agreements do not support human rights abuses.
- Support asylum seekers from Sri Lanka who are at risk because of the PTA.
- Raise awareness in Parliament to hold Sri Lanka accountable for its human rights violations.
This is not just about Sri Lanka – it’s about protecting the fundamental rights of people everywhere. We need to act now to end the suffering caused by the PTA.
Please sign this petition to stand up for human rights and justice.
