The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly voted to recognize the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity” and to call for steps toward justice and healing.

Yet the United States was one of only three countries to vote against this resolution.

This moment is about more than policy — it is about acknowledging history, honoring the millions who suffered, and standing with the global community in recognizing the lasting impact of slavery.

The resolution also encourages dialogue on reparatory justice and the return of cultural heritage, aiming to address historical wrongs and promote reconciliation.

When 123 countries come together to recognize such a defining injustice, the United States should not stand apart.

We call on President Donald Trump, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and Congress to vote for the UN resolution that recognizes slavery as a crime against humanity and to engage constructively in global discussions on justice and reconciliation.
