As members of the Coptic community and allies to human rights, we are deeply concerned about the alarming situation of Coptic Christian girls in Egypt. These young girls are being subjected to horrific abuses, including abductions, forced conversions, and marriages, without any significant intervention or justice. This is a gross violation of human rights that cannot be ignored.

The Coptic community, a religious minority in Egypt, has faced increasing persecution over the years. According to reports from reputable human rights organizations, Coptic girls are often targeted due to their vulnerable status and religious identity. The prevalence of these abuses remains underreported, and victims seldom receive the protection or justice they deserve from the Egyptian authorities.

Coptic Christian girls in Egypt are being systematically targeted for abduction, sexual violence, forced marriage, and forced religious conversion — and the world continues to look away.

On a near-daily basis, Coptic Christian families report that their daughters — many of them minors — are kidnapped off the streets, from schools, or on their way to work. Victims are frequently drugged, raped, threatened, and coerced into signing conversion documents or entering marriages against their will. In many cases, contact with their families is cut off entirely.

When families seek help, they are often met with police inaction, intimidation, or pressure to drop their complaints. Instead of rescuing victims, authorities have repeatedly returned girls to their abductors or declared them “willing converts” despite clear evidence of coercion, abuse, and fear.

These are not isolated incidents. They represent a documented and ongoing pattern of abuse against a vulnerable religious minority. 

It is imperative that international bodies take immediate action. We call upon the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Department of State, and respected international human rights organizations to launch a comprehensive investigation into these abuses. Holding the Egyptian government accountable is crucial to ensuring that these violations do not continue with impunity.

Concrete steps need to be implemented to protect these young girls. This includes increased diplomatic pressure on the Egyptian government, ensuring international oversight and transparency, and facilitating resources for immediate and long-term protection and justice. Raising this issue on an international platform is essential to push for systemic change.
