Urge the Texas House to Fund Schools First and Keep Public Dollars in Public Schools

The Issue

As a dedicated school board member, I have seen firsthand the potential and the success of our children within the Mansfield ISD. Our performance is above average, we are a community that prides itself in our educational institutions, and we provide school choice within our district. Yet, to uphold the high standards of education we provide, we are in dire need of proper funding.

As such, we are calling on the Texas House Public Education Committee to increase per pupil spending by $1300. Investing in our students is not just beneficial to them but to our society as a whole. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, increasing per-student spending yields significant improvements in educational attainment and earnings for students and could substantially alleviate poverty and inequality in adulthood.

We also urge the opposition against Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) that siphon public resources away from our public schools. ESAs are detrimental to our public education system as they redirect public dollars to private institutions. As per the Economic Policy Institute, this can lead to a disparity in the allocation of funds and potentially widen the gap in educational quality between public and private institutions.

We, the community members, educators and parents of HD96, HD101 and HD 58 in Texas, implore the Committee  to consider our request. Our children's future and the quality of public education in our state depend on the wise execution of these financial resources. It's time to act now and foster an environment where all children have equal opportunities to learn and succeed.

Please, sign this petition and together, we can ensure a brighter future for the children of Texas.

Hi Friend, Greg Abbott and out of state billionaires continue to try to push private school vouchers through the Texas Legislature—this time in the form of House Bill 3. House Bill 3 is the largest and most expensive private school voucher scam ever proposed in the Texas Legislature. HB 3 will redirect your hard-earned taxpayer dollars from your neighborhood public schools and provide public funding to private schools that are subject to no accountability and that can pick and choose the students they want to educate. House Bill 3 will be heard in the Public Education Committee next Tuesday, 3/11: https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/89R/schedules/html/C4002025031108001.htm?nvep=&hmac=&emci=2f06cdde-75fb-ef11-90cd-0022482a9fb7&emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&ceid= This is the time that we need parents, educators, and every pro-public education community member to come to the Texas Capitol to tell our Legislature that you support public schools and oppose any private school voucher scam. Now is the time to make your voice heard! You can tell the legislature that you oppose vouchers & support our neighborhood public schools in the following ways: To testify in person: - The public hearing will begin at 8 am, in room 140 of the John H. Reagan building (adjacent to the capitol at 1400 Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78701). - This hearing is likely to continue all day. - A public parking garage is located at 1201 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, Texas 78701 - To register to testify in person, find a kiosk outside of the hearing room and submit the required information. - Please note that public testimony has been limited to 2 minutes and the chair may limit the number of testifying witnesses. If you are not able to testify in person you can submit a public comment on HB 3 here: https://comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c400&nvep=&hmac=&emci=2f06cdde-75fb-ef11-90cd-0022482a9fb7&emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&ceid= Public comments will be accepted until the hearing adjourns. If your State Representative supports vouchers, or you are not sure where they stand, you can call their office to make sure they know that their constituents support public education and oppose private school vouchers. You can look up your state representative here: https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home?nvep=&hmac=&emci=2f06cdde-75fb-ef11-90cd-0022482a9fb7&emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&ceid= If you have any questions or need assistance in making your voice heard, my capitol staff is here to help. Please reach out to us at 512-463-0574 or email us at Chris.Turner@house.texas.gov As we move forward, I will continue to keep you informed in the fight against vouchers and I will keep fighting with everything I have to keep public tax dollars in public schools. -Chris
