Urge the Springfield Board of Education to Preserve Pershing Elementary School

The Issue

Pershing Elementary is the heart of the Brentwood and Southern Hills neighborhoods. It’s more than just a school; it's an environment where children feel safe and nurtured. It's heartbreaking to think that such an essential part of our community could be taken away due to closure.

The potential of closing Pershing Elementary will affect thousands of students and families. And not just Pershing families, but also Wilder and Field. The school administration has recommended Pershing students (a school that sits at 90% capacity) move to Wilder and Field. Projections show (although we are uncertain the numbers are fully accurate to our disadvantage) would put Wilder at 90% capacity by 2028 and Field at 102%—almost and over capacity! This also doesn’t take into account that Brentwood and Southern Hills residents are aging out and young families moving in. Why would any of us want our kids going to schools that are maxed out without room to grow?

We must remember that schools are not merely buildings; they are pillars of communities, shaping futures and providing safe spaces for children.

Therefore, we urge the Board of Education to NOT CLOSE Pershing Elementary School. Let us work together towards maintaining this vital educational resource and community for our children and future generations in Springfield.

Please sign this petition today! Your signature can help keep Pershing Elementary open and continue its legacy as a beacon of hope for many families. And if you attend Wilder and Field, please consider signing—this impacts your families, too!

Sincerely, Pershing Elem PTA

UPDATE: a public hearing with the Superintendent has been announced for January 8th at 5:30 pm at Pershing Elementary. Will you please come in support to keep the school open?
