The Issue

I write with urgency on behalf of the Iranian people, who over the past twelve days have taken to the streets in massive, largely peaceful demonstrations across major cities including Tehran, Shiraz, Tabriz, Ahvaz, Kermanshah, Mashhad, and Isfahan. Ordinary citizens—unarmed and resolute—are confronting an entrenched regime with extraordinary courage. In response, Iranian authorities have employed military force, imposed sweeping digital censorship, and enacted a nationwide internet and phone blackout that has severely limited the world’s ability to witness events and the people’s ability to organize and seek help. This is not merely a domestic disturbance; it is a powerful, popular demand for dignity, accountability, and basic human rights.

History underscores the stakes. Past U.S. policy choices in the 1970s and 1980s contributed to long‑term instability across the Middle East; today’s uprising presents a rare opportunity to support a peaceful transition away from extremist rule without repeating those mistakes. The Iranian people are asking for solidarity and international pressure that protects civilians, preserves channels of communication, and amplifies their calls for revolution. U.S. leadership at this moment can help prevent further regional destabilization, reduce the risk of wider conflict, and advance both humanitarian and strategic interests.

We respectfully request support for a peaceful and orderly transfer of power to the transitional leadership under Reza Pahlavi, for which many in Iran are chanting in the streets, including the slogan “Javid Shah.” The Iranian people are exhausted by economic collapse, pervasive censorship, and the constant threat of repression. We urge your administration to take immediate, concrete steps: publicly condemn the censorship and communications blackout; demand an end to indiscriminate use of force against unarmed protesters; press for the restoration of internet and phone services so independent verification and humanitarian coordination can proceed; and coordinate with allies to deter mass atrocities and prioritize humanitarian relief. Independent monitors and human rights organizations warn that communications shutdowns are being used to conceal abuses and facilitate violent crackdowns, making swift international action essential to protect innocent lives.

Iran's population, rich in history and culture, deserves the right to live in peace and prosperity. Recent demonstrations in Iran have highlighted the population's desire for reform, transparency, and freedom from oppressive regimes. However, the Iranian government continues to suppress these legitimate voices through forceful means, including unlawful detentions and human rights abuses.

At this critical juncture, it is imperative that the United States leverage its diplomatic influence to advocate for the Iranian people. This includes prioritizing human rights issues in diplomatic negotiations and offering humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering caused by economic sanctions, which tend to impact the civilian population most severely.

By taking these steps, the United States can send a powerful message of solidarity and support to the people of Iran, demonstrating its commitment to human rights and social justice on a global scale.

Sign this petition to urge the President of the United States to take decisive action in support of Iran's courageous citizens who seek freedom and prosperity. Together, we can advocate for change and a better future for the people of Iran.
