The Issue

Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been a contentious issue for many across Nova Scotia for years. I am among the countless individuals who struggle with the biannual time change. It disrupts my daily routine, affects my sleep patterns, and places undue stress on my body. I believe these disruptions are shared by many others, making it a widespread concern that impacts the health and well-being of countless Nova Scotians.

Scientific research supports the argument against DST. Studies have shown that the disruption of our body's natural rhythm can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks, depression, and other health issues. In areas where DST has been abolished, such as certain regions in Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory, residents reportedly enjoy smoother transitions and healthier, more stable routines.

Furthermore, the historical reasons for DST such as energy conservation are now outdated, thanks to modern technology and energy-saving advancements.

Many countries around the world have done away with DST, acknowledging its adverse effects. In 2020, the European Parliament voted to abolish seasonal clock changes from 2021 onwards. Nova Scotia should follow this progressive step and take the lead in prioritizing its citizens’ health and well-being.

We urge the government of Nova Scotia to seriously consider the discontinuation of the time change in the fall. Eliminating DST will not only promote better health and well-being but also enhance productivity and overall quality of life for all Nova Scotians.

Join me in calling upon local leaders to act swiftly and decisively by eliminating the time change in Nova Scotia. Sign this petition to demand change and bring an end to the outdated practice of Daylight Saving Time.
