The Issue

In 2014, my life changed when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and five years ago, my diagnosis was updated to secondary progressive MS. This transformation has not only altered my personal journey but has also exposed the stark realities faced by many in the progressive MS community. While there is a plethora of treatments available for individuals with Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS), the same cannot be said for those of us dealing with the progressive forms.

The NHS, renowned globally for its comprehensive healthcare services, unfortunately, falls short when addressing the needs of progressive MS patients. Specifically, the neurology services within the NHS lack significantly in offering viable treatment options for those with progressive MS. It feels as though our progression in MS aligns with a regression in the support and resources available from our healthcare providers.

This disparity doesn't just hinder medical progress but fundamentally impacts the quality of life for many who are unable to access the advancements being made globally, particularly in the USA, where much of the pioneering research in MS treatment is occurring. However, our reliance on international research is not a sustainable solution for a robust healthcare system like the NHS.

By bolstering research initiatives within the UK and equipping our neurologists with more resources and information about innovative treatments, we can take critical steps forward. Progressive MS patients deserve the same hope and attention to their healthcare needs as all others. Boosting funding, fostering research partnerships, and updating treatment protocols is essential to leveling the playing field for all MS patients.

Calling for a redesign in the approach, strategy, and resources dedicated to MS, particularly its progressive forms, is not just a call for myself but for the thousands who feel neglected by their healthcare system. We need tangible changes to ensure that every person with MS gets access to the best possible care, therapies, and futures.

Let's urge the NHS to allocate more resources and research towards the treatment of progressive MS, ensuring a future where all MS patients are given equal opportunities for treatment and care. Sign this petition and help us drive the change needed for a more balanced and hopeful approach to Multiple Sclerosis within our healthcare system.
