Urge the Museum of Pop Culture to honor Layne Staley

The Issue

The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle is a global hub for music history, celebrating the innovators who shaped our culture. While MoPOP has rightly honored legends like Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana, a critical piece of Seattle's story is missing: a permanent exhibit dedicated to Layne Staley, the extraordinary voice of Alice in Chains and Mad Season.

Layne Staley was more than just a singer; he was the sonic soul of the grunge movement. His haunting, powerful vocals and brutally honest lyrics resonated with millions, creating a sound that was both heavy and deeply personal. Artists like Billy Corgan have described his voice as "beautiful, sad, [and] haunting," and his influence on modern rock is undeniable.

Layne's story is inextricably linked to Seattle. He was a foundational artist in the scene that put the city on the world's musical map. A permanent exhibit at MoPOP would not only honor his artistic contributions but also preserve the legacy of a man who, through his pain, gave comfort and a voice to a generation.

This is personal to me because his music was a lifeline during a difficult period in my life. The vulnerability and honesty in songs like "Nutshell" and "Down in a Hole" helped me feel understood, not so alone, and gave me the courage to face my own struggles. A permanent exhibit would honor an artist who, through his own pain, gave so much to others.

We ask the Museum of Pop Culture to recognize Layne Staley's immense impact and create a dedicated exhibit that celebrates his life, his music, and his indelible mark on history.
