My regiment, in concert with all other units of the Armed Services, lost many soldiers and saw many more wounded in combat during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, fought in coalition with the United States. In total, 626 British servicemen and women lost their lives in these conflicts, 541 of them in combat. Against this record, President Trump’s claim that allied forces “hung back” is not merely false but contemptuous.
This is no ordinary insult. It is a slur on the courage and sacrifice of British servicemen and women, one that will cause deep hurt to bereaved families and justifiable anger among those who served. The King is Colonel-in-Chief of my regiment (among many others) and head of the Armed Forces as a whole. I would like to respectfully petition His Majesty to withhold the proposed state visit until a full and unequivocal apology is issued.
