The Issue

To the Prime Minister and His Majesty’s Government,

We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the UK Government to advise against a visit by His Majesty the King to the United States under the current political circumstances.

This request is made with due respect for the constitutional role of the Monarch and the established principle that overseas visits by the Sovereign are undertaken on the advice of His Majesty’s Government and serve as expressions of the United Kingdom’s values, alliances, and moral standing.

Recent statements and actions by U.S. President Donald Trump, who is expected to play a central role in any such visit, raise serious concerns regarding compatibility with those values. In particular:

- Mr Trump has made public remarks that appear to demean or dismiss the sacrifices of allied armed forces, including British service personnel who served alongside allies in Afghanistan. Such comments are profoundly disrespectful to those who served and to the families of those who lost their lives.

- Recent rhetoric and actions associated with Mr Trump demonstrate the use of coercive, authoritarian methods to enforce immigration policy, including the undermining of due process, the rule of law, and the legitimisation of political violence. These practices are incompatible with democratic norms and fundamental human rights.

His Majesty the King is not only Head of State of a democratic nation, but also Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and a symbolic guardian of the United Kingdom’s constitutional principles, including:

- respect for democratic institutions,

- freedom of expression,

- adherence to the rule of law, and

- rejection of authoritarianism and political violence.

A visit by the Sovereign to a foreign state is among the most powerful symbolic acts the United Kingdom can make. It conveys honour, legitimacy, and moral recognition. Proceeding with such a visit under these circumstances risks damaging the United Kingdom’s moral authority, dishonouring the service and sacrifice of British Armed Forces, and placing the Monarch in a position that may be perceived as endorsing conduct contrary to British democratic values.

We therefore respectfully request that His Majesty’s Government advise against a visit by the King to the United States at this time, and ensure that the Crown is not used to confer legitimacy on actions or rhetoric that conflict with the principles the Monarch represents.

This request is made in defence of democratic values, respect for the Armed Forces, and the constitutional integrity of the monarchy.
