Urge The Indian Government to Enhance Civic Hygiene and Food Safety Standards
The Issue

This issue is driven by my personal experience and concern about the need to improve hygiene and food safety in India, where I was born and raised. I understand firsthand the effects that poor sanitation can have on our towns, communities, and public health. Every time my family eats out, especially with ubiquitous street food that forms part of the cultural fabric, there's a worry for their health and safety due to the potential for substandard hygiene practices.
India is a vibrant nation known globally for its cultural heritage, warm people, and, of course, its delectable cuisines. Street food forms an integral part of this country, with vendors dotting the corners of each street, serving a palette of flavors passed down through generations. While this has been a feature of Indian culture, it can't be denied that health safety often gets overlooked at these stalls. With an alarming annual tally of foodborne diseases, the situation is gravely serious. According to a report by the World Health Organization, an estimated 600 million—almost 1 in 10 people in the world—fall ill after eating contaminated food, statistics that contribute significantly to India.
Furthermore, the lack of comprehensive civic sense, seen in the form of littering and neglecting cleanliness in public domains, has ramifications beyond the blight on our cityscapes. Carelessly discarded trash, unpleasant odors, and an overall unhealthy environment contribute to multiple health concerns and degrade the quality of life for all inhabitants. This situation also affects how foreigners perceive India when they visit. While not all foreigners hold negative views, some come with a set mindset to malign India, taking advantage of the very issues we neglect. Negative experiences related to cleanliness and food safety can lead to unfavorable opinions and even racist remarks, which are often rooted in our own shortcomings. We should take action to improve our nation and stop giving them opportunities to critique us.
We urge the Indian government to urgently and emphatically address these issues. It needs to enact strict regulations and monitor their enforcement to ensure cleanliness in public areas and encourage better civic awareness among citizens. Additionally, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) should take necessary steps to ensure that food vendors adhere to high hygiene and safety standards.
Let's work together towards a cleaner environment, safer food, and healthier lives for all. Your support and voice in signing this petition will send a strong message to the decision-makers that we are serious about the necessity of such reforms. Please sign and share this important petition.
