Urge The House Of Commons Speaker Not To Invite The US President To Address Parliament

The Issue

The Leader of the Opposition has challenged the Prime Minister to invite President-elect Trump to address the Houses of Parliament, stating that not to do so smacks of student posturing. To follow this suggestion would be neither patriotic or adult.  The UK should not be endorsing or encouraging someone so recently convicted, especially when the person in question is as influential as the President of the United States.  Furthermore, we must recognise that such a display of weakness is certain to encourage an appetite for further national humiliation.

This is not about disregarding diplomatic protocols nor cutting ties with an important ally. This is about respecting and upholding the pivotal values our Parliament epitomizes - justice, fairness, and accountability. Inviting a convicted individual to address the UK parliament sends a mixed signal about our adherence to these values. It suggests we are willing to let certain individuals bypass the rules, creating a dichotomy that can lead to social unrest and divide.

Moreover, this invitation could have unintended consequences. Beyond the signal it sends domestically, it could also impact our international standing - the UK's reputation for being a beacon of justice and democracy.

I call upon the Speaker of the House of Commons to reject any notion of extending an invitation to the convicted US President to address parliament - an action that would directly contradict our staunch insistence on upholding values and stringent standards.

It is essential that we voice our concerns to ensure our values are not compromised and our nation's self worth trampled upon.  Please sign this petition to voice your discontent and further the cause.
