We, the citizens of Hanover and surrounding areas, raise concerns about the proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). We believe this facility poses potential risks to our environment, health, and local economy. The close proximity to our school, Lake Erie, drinking water sources, as well as residential and commercial areas gives rise to justified anxiety. Property values could plausibly be affected by the presence of such a facility, threatening the financial stability of homeowners. Similarly, local businesses could also suffer as a result of this project. 

In 2012, a similar BESS facility in Hawaii led to a fire which lasted for three days, underscoring the potential risks associated with such installations (source: Energy Storage Association).

In 2023 there were 3 fires at separate storage facilities in NY state alone.  Showing this is an issue that happens frequently. 

We urge the Hanover Town Board to reject such a facility and prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents. Please sign this petition and implore the Board to say no to the BESS proposal.
