Urge the Government to Utilise Empty Properties to Resolve the Housing Crisis

Urge the Government to Utilise Empty Properties to Resolve the Housing Crisis
The Issue
Having volunteered with numerous charities in the UK, I've witnessed the disturbing impact of homelessness on individuals, families, and particularly children. I believe that a solution exists right before our eyes.
There are almost 700,000 vacant and unfurnished homes in England according to the latest government statistics, with 261,471 of them being "long-term empty," indicating they've been unoccupied for six months or more. Many have been empty for years and are not maintained. As they stand, many are a target for vandalism and a health risk to the local community.
We need to urge the government to pass a law obligating local councils to use their existing powers and lease or purchase these properties, which can subsequently be rented out.
This viable strategy can help overcome the housing crisis far faster than the anticipated timeline of new homes being constructed. By optimising these available resources, we can provide decent housing for hundreds of thousands and tackle this national crisis.
It’s time we stood up for those struggling with homelessness and provided a practical solution that is right under our noses. Please sign this petition and pave the way for a better housing future in our nation.
