Urge the Government to Reconsider the New Law on Vinted and eBay Sales Declaration

The Issue

As a busy mum who regularly buys and sells clothes and unwanted items on Vinted and eBay, I find the new law requiring these companies to declare who has made more than £1000 to HMRC deeply unjust. It feels like a slap in the face that while numerous large corporations exploit loopholes to avoid paying their fair share of taxes, those of us struggling to make ends meet are being targeted.

This law is not just affecting me but thousands of others who rely on these platforms for additional income or as a means of recycling unwanted goods. According to Statista, in 2020 alone, there were approximately 4 million users selling items on eBay in the UK (Statista, 2020). This figure does not even account for those using Vinted or other similar platforms.

We understand that tax laws are essential for maintaining public services. However, it seems unfair that whilst major corporations continue exploiting tax loopholes costing billions each year (Tax Justice Network), ordinary citizens making modest profits from second-hand sales are being scrutinised.

We urge our government representatives to reconsider this new law and open it up for debate again. We need a fairer system where everyone pays their rightful share without penalising those already struggling financially.
