Urge the FDA to Ban Red Dye 3

The Issue

Urge the FDA to ban Red Dye 3, a harmful food and drug additive linked to causing cancer.

Despite being banned in cosmetics since 1990 due to its carcinogenic effects on lab animals, it is still authorized by the FDA for use in food and ingested drugs.

Two dozen members of Congress, led by Rep. Rosa DeLauro, recently made a Congressional Letter that urges the FDA to ban Red 3 because of its carcinogenic effect. This is part of the ongoing effort to press the FDA to take action on prohibiting the use of Red 3.

The FDA has been reviewing a petition filed in 2022 by 24 food and safety protection organizations and scientists to review the authorization of Red Dye 3. The FDA has an obligation to rule on the petition within 180 days, but has yet to do so.

Along with members of Congress, we are urging the FDA to ban Red 3. This will require food companies to reformulate their products, replacing Red 3 with a safer ingredient. Alternatives are widely available.

Why is FDA authorization so important?

Currently, many Americans unknowingly consume Red Dye 3 on a daily basis through common foods like candy, cookies, fruit juices, and even some medications. This dangerous additive poses a significant public health risk, and it’s critical for the FDA to revoke its authorization for its use, as it will protect Americans and make food safer for everyone.

History:

Red 3 is a dangerous additive that has been found in ingested drugs and common foods. In addition to its carcinogenic effect, research has also shown that Red 3 can cause neurobehavioral issues in children.

The California Food Safety Act, which will take effect on January 1, 2027, prohibits the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of food and beverages containing four harmful additives, including Red 3. States like Missouri, Washington, New York, and Illinois, have all introduced similar legislation. The United States regretfully is far behind several other countries in banning Red 3, including the European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Japan.

Why Sign Now?

With recent Congressional pressure on the FDA, it’s more important NOW than ever to demonstrate widespread public support for banning Red 3.
