Urge the Elysian Theater to cease Big D's King of Clown course

Urge the Elysian Theater to cease Big D's King of Clown course
The Issue
Having been part of the vibrant Los Angeles community as a non-binary drag king and clown, I have firsthand experience of the importance of inclusive and respectful educational environments. This is why it was particularly disheartening to encounter transphobia and enbyphobia in the courses led by Deanna Fleysher, known as Big D, at the Elysian Theater. Many of us attempted to engage in dialogue about the damaging narratives being perpetuated in the King of Clown course, only for the instructor to claim 'artistic expression' to defend their bigotry and simply changing the wording of the course instead of acknowledging the issue and apologizing. These narratives include classifying trans men and non-binary individuals as women, and limiting opportunities for non-binary people, which paints a flawed and harmful picture of 'good' vs 'bad' types of nonbinary people
The arts have always been a powerful vehicle for expressing identity and exploring the self in all its facets. However, teaching environments that promulgate stereotypes and restrict participation based on gender identity bind this exploration and stunt personal growth. It is crucial that educational spaces, particularly those concerning such a personal and expressive medium, are inclusive and affirming for all identities.
We call upon the Elysian Theater to take a firm stance against bigotry by ceasing the King of Clown course under its current direction. This is an opportunity for the theater to reaffirm its commitment to diversity and inclusion by sponsoring courses that celebrate the authenticity of every participant's identity and ensuring their educators promote respect and understanding without exception.
The Elysian Theater has the chance to lead by example, promoting an arts community that is supportive and safe for everyone, regardless of their gender identity. By taking meaningful steps to address these concerns, they can help cultivate a more inclusive environment in the Los Angeles arts scene.
Join us in this important cause by signing this petition to urge the Elysian Theater to terminate the King of Clown course in its current form. Together, we can stand against discrimination and foster an environment where all are truly welcome.
