The Issue

Living in the extreme conditions of the Mojave Desert, groundwater is more than a resource: it is the lifeblood for our communities. It is what sustains every form of life in the Amargosa River Basin.

However, this essential resource is under threat. There is a proposed mineral withdrawal action that could change everything. This action, if implemented, would prevent new mining projects that pose a direct risk to our water supply and the security of our communities.

The Amargosa River Basin, with its pristine landscapes and rich history, is more than just land: it is an essential part of our lives. Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, situated here, not only boasts a captivating array of wildlife but also holds cultural and historical significance for Tribes and modern Americans alike. Protecting this piece of our heritage should be a priority for all who cherish our nation's treasures.

The Department of the Interior under President Trump has the opportunity to make a historic decision in favor of rural communities by following through on the proposed mineral withdrawal. This action would safeguard our limited and precious groundwater resources and ensure that future generations can thrive.

Research has shown that unchecked mining operations in this area can lead to irreversible damage to groundwater reserves, required by both ecosystems and people. The economic livelihoods of local residents heavily rely on agriculture, a sector fundamentally dependent on consistent and clean water supply.

This action is supported by the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, Nye County, Amargosa Valley, Beatty, and thousands of local Nevadans and Americans who care passionately about this special landscape.

Join me in urging the Department of the Interior to stand with rural communities in the Amargosa River Basin by endorsing this essential mineral withdrawal. Your signature can make a difference in preserving our water resources, securing local livelihoods, and conserving the Ash Meadows for future generations to appreciate.
