The Issue

For generations, Springport, Hamlin, and Brookfield have been defined by their farmland — open fields, family operations, and a shared pride in feeding our region. Now, 2,500 acres of that land is threatened by Hecate Energy, a Chicago-based solar corporation that is outbidding local farmers with lease payments of 5-10x the market rate for agricultural land. However, their promise of "clean" energy comes with a permanent transformation to our cherished rural surroundings and uncertain environmental consequences.

This concern stretches far beyond losing a beautiful view. It's about how these distant corporations overpower our local farmers, leasing thousands of acres of our precious, food-producing lands for solar panels that will occupy our fields for at least 30 years. These lands, typically leased by farmers in our community who cannot afford ownership, represent a vital source of livelihood, sustenance, and regional identity.

Pursuing renewable energy should not come at the cost of farmland and our community's future. According to the American Farmland Trust, the U.S. loses over 2,000 acres of farmland to development every day. Allowing this project would accelerate this alarming trend, posing a direct threat to our agricultural economy and food security.

Large-scale solar projects come with unanswered environmental questions — from soil contamination and water runoff to the disposal of toxic materials once panels reach the end of their lifespan. There’s still no long-term research proving these projects are safe for surrounding ecosystems or rural water tables.

We strongly urge the Michigan Public Service Commission to deny Hecate Energy's application. Instead, we suggest exploring alternative sites such as brownfields, industrial sites, or other non-agricultural areas that can sustain solar operations without impacting farming.

Join us in protecting our rural heritage and preserving farmland for future generations. Sign this petition to urge the Michigan Public Service Commission to deny the Hecate Fiddlehead Solar Project's application and to respect the defined community values written in our original township zoning. Our land is our legacy—let's stand together to safeguard it.

note: this is not a petition to put anything on a voting ballot, it is to show our voice as a community. There will be MORE OPPORTUNITY to make comments once the application is submitted as well. Join our facebook group for updates!
