We urge the city council of Greater Dandenong to consider the proposal of renaming the 'Afghan Bazar' to 'Little Bamyan'. The name 'Little Bamyan' would help highlight one of Afghanistan's major cultural centres, Bamyan. Bamyan is known for its historical and cultural significance as a UNESCO World heritage site and has long been a symbol of peace and resilience in Afghanistan. By renaming the 'Afghan Bazar' to 'Little Bamyan', we can enrich the multicultural identity of Dandenong and emphasize the unique Afghan heritage that the area holds. Changing the name also provides an opportunity for the Afghan community in Dandenong to express their deep ties with their homeland and disseminate knowledge about their rich cultural heritage amongst other residents. This simple act of renaming can also help the young generation in the community to keep their historic roots alive while living in a multicultural society. In a city as ethnically diverse as Greater Dandenong, the preservation and celebration of distinct cultural identities is essential.
