Urge the Borough of Rutherford to Sponsor the Crescent Lighting

The Issue

Last year, on March 8, 2024, the Borough of Rutherford organized a historical Crescent Lighting, a festive cultural celebration, open to people from all faiths and cultures, to come and commemorate the month of Ramadan. The town stood by its promise and virtues of inclusivity, and honored the community through the Crescent Lighting, which brought people together, displaying unity and respect. The town’s commitment to inclusivity was only reflected more when a multitude of different residents from town and the surrounding municipalities came to enjoy the display and take pictures.

On the 1st of January, a new policy was issued which states:

Only fixed displays that will be permitted in the public parks in the Borough are those specifically displayed by the Borough Governing Body, effective January 1, 2025.

The residents of Rutherford appeal to the Borough Governing Body to display the beautiful Crescent. The importance of consistent policies can be understood; however, the decision itself restricts the cultural celebration that is enjoyed by people in Bergen county and across New Jersey. Over 50 neighboring towns are actively participating in the crescent lighting event. Many towns are sponsoring it themselves, taking an interest in their community’s rich and diverse culture. The overwhelming response from people a year ago was full of excitement and love for the lighting and what it means for the community/ For the past several weeks residents have been asking about the crescent lighting and are eagerly waiting for the Council to schedule it..

We live in a community that enjoys many cultures and we hope that the Borough of Rutherford is open to celebrations and does NOT send its residents to other municipalities to have these beautiful experiences. We would like our neighboring towns to visit and enjoy Rutherford lights and experience our town’s warm welcome and shop in local businesses.
