The Issue

I'm a pharmacist and pharmacy operator in British Columbia, and like many of my colleagues, I'm deeply concerned about recent changes to the reimbursement policy for daily dispense fees. As frontline healthcare providers, pharmacists play a crucial role in ensuring patients receive their medications safely and effectively, often managing prescriptions for complex drug therapies that require daily attention.

Recently, the BC Ministry of Health has reduced the reimbursement for daily dispense from three total fees to only two. This policy change directly impacts not only the viability of community pharmacies but also the quality of care we are able to provide to our patients—particularly those who rely on daily medication management for chronic and critical health conditions.

Many patients with chronic illnesses require daily dispensed medications to maintain their health and prevent complications. The fee reduction puts pressure on pharmacies to cut back on services to remain financially viable, which can lead to less time spent on patient care, shorter pharmacy hours, and even staff reductions. These changes threaten to destabilize patient care, especially in underserved communities where access to healthcare is already limited.

Moreover, pharmacists in BC have already faced increased workloads due to the pandemic, stepping up to serve our communities amidst rising costs and resource constraints. Additional financial pressures weaken our ability to deliver the high standard of care our patients deserve.

Peer-reviewed studies and healthcare reports emphasize the importance of consistent and comprehensive pharmacy services, demonstrating how adequate funding positively impacts patient outcomes and overall community health. For example, a study in the Canadian Pharmacists Journal highlights that pharmacies with sufficient resources and compensation provide better patient counseling and improved medication adherence, reducing hospital admissions and healthcare costs.

We urge the BC Ministry of Health to revisit this decision and engage with pharmacy professionals to understand the full implications. Restoring the third fee for daily dispense will help maintain the integrity of pharmacy services and ensure that pharmacists can continue to offer essential healthcare services to all residents of BC.

Please join us in advocating for a fair and sustainable reimbursement model that recognizes and supports the invaluable work of pharmacists. Sign this petition to help us restore essential funding and continue providing top-level healthcare to our communities.
