The Issue

For nearly two decades, Doctor Who Christmas and New Year specials have been more than just episodes — they have been traditions. They have brought families together, delivered hope and wonder during the festive season, and created some of the programme’s most unforgettable moments. As one of the most influential eras in the show’s history approaches its conclusion, fans believe it deserves a farewell worthy of its legacy.

We are calling on the BBC to commission a one off special in 2027.

We know that the Doctor Who Christmas episode was cancelled and there may not be time to bring that into production but we urge the BBC to sir a Special to mark the conclusion of the Russell T Davies era and bridge the gap towards a new era of our beloved show.

Russell T Davies is widely credited with revitalising Doctor Who and shaping many of its most iconic stories, characters, and emotional highs. This era reintroduced the Doctor to a global audience, welcomed a new generation of viewers, and re‑established the show as a cornerstone of British television. Its impact continues to be felt across the Whoniverse and beyond.

A special would serve as the perfect curtain call, celebrating the warmth, imagination, and emotional depth that have defined this era. Such  an episode could honour the past while delivering the sense of joy and occasion that festive Doctor Who is renowned for.

Importantly, this special should also look forward as well as back. Whether aired at Christmas or in 2007, the episode could meaningfully explore what happens next for the Doctor as portrayed by Billie Piper. Fans are eager to see this incarnation acknowledged and developed on screen, rather than left unexplained between productions. A special would ensure narrative continuity and avoid a missing gap, allowing the story to transition smoothly into the next phase of Doctor Who.

The programme has always excelled at thoughtful regeneration and era transitions. A dedicated  Special would provide the ideal bridge,  offering clarity, excitement, and confidence in the future of the series, while ensuring no chapter feels unfinished.

This petition is not only about celebrating an extraordinary creative era, but about safeguarding the storytelling integrity of Doctor Who going forward.

If Doctor Who has ever made you laugh, cry, or believe in something better, now is the time to speak up. Sign and share this petition to ask the BBC to deliver a Christmas or New Year Special that honours the Russell T Davies era, celebrates the Doctor’s future, and ensures the story continues without a missing chapter.
