The Issue

This petition was created in conjunction with Belmont University's Social Entrepreneurship course "Radical Champions-Lead Change for Social Impact."

"Growing up in a family that has endured the hardships of generational poverty, I know firsthand the challenges and obstacles that can seem insurmountable. As a first-generation student and an individual who has managed to break free from this cycle of poverty, I am painfully aware of the systemic issues that persist and continue to affect countless families across our state. This experience has driven me to advocate for change and to seek better support systems for families who find themselves trapped in this cycle." -Campaign team member, Abby Hodge (2025).

Generational poverty is a complex and pervasive issue affecting many Tennesseans. According to the 2021 Census Bureau data, Tennessee has a poverty rate of 13.8%, which is higher than the national average. Families in generational poverty often face barriers such as lack of access to quality education, affordable housing, and healthcare. These barriers create a cycle that is difficult to escape without adequate support and intervention.

To address these challenges, we are calling on Tennessee state legislators to prioritize policies and programs that provide real support to families stuck in this cycle. We need increased funding for quality education initiatives that ensure all children, regardless of their background, have access to the resources they need to succeed. Additionally, expanding access to affordable housing and comprehensive healthcare will give families the foundation they need to establish stability and thrive.

It's time for our policymakers to listen to the voices of those affected and to implement solutions that can break the cycle of generational poverty once and for all. As part of this petition, we invite signers to share their personal experiences and struggles with poverty. These testimonies will serve as powerful evidence to influence decision-makers and illustrate the real, human impact of this issue.

Join us in urging Tennessee legislators to take action now. Your signature and your story are crucial steps in building a movement to drive change. Sign the petition today and stand with us in supporting Tennessee families in need of hope and opportunity. Together, we can make a difference.
