Urge Syrian government to acknowledge Assad-regime atrocities

Urge Syrian government to acknowledge Assad-regime atrocities
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call upon the Syrian government to adopt measures that ensure the crimes and atrocities committed during the Assad era are truthfully documented, publicly recognized, and never repeated.
For decades, Syrians suffered under a system marked by repression, arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances, and other grave violations of human rights. Lasting national reconciliation cannot be built on denial, silence, or historical revisionism.
We therefore call upon the Syrian government to:
- Officially recognize and document the atrocities committed by the Assad regime.
- Establish a national archive and memorial program to preserve historical records and honor the victims.
- Incorporate accurate, evidence-based education about these events into school curricula and public institutions.
- Require public officials, judges, military officers, security personnel, civil servants, and applicants for Syrian citizenship to affirm their commitment to constitutional government, human rights, and the rejection of the practices and crimes of the Assad regime.
- Prohibit and criminalize the public denial, glorification, or justification of Assad-regime atrocities
- Establish mechanisms for truth, accountability, and national reconciliation that help ensure such abuses never occur again.
Our objective is not revenge or collective punishment. Our objective is to ensure that future generations understand what occurred, honor the victims, preserve the historical record, and build a Syria founded on truth, accountability, justice, and respect for human dignity.
A nation that confronts its past honestly is better prepared to protect its future.
