Urge South Lanarkshire Council to Raise a Palestinian Flag in Solidarity

The Issue

As a global citizen deeply engaged in peace activism, and fervently advocating for rights, equality, and justice, I find myself stricken with despair by the ongoing crises in Palestine. Specifically, the situation in Gaza where, after almost eight decades of systemic oppression, the people are now threatened with genocide. In such traumatic times, we need to manifest our resolve and solidarity with innocent lives bearing the brunt of such horrendous circumstances.

I am appealing to the South Lanarkshire Council to put forth a symbolic but influential gesture of support for the Palestinian people by raising a Palestinian flag at its headquarters on Almada Street. While it is abundantly clear that such an act will not directly impact the violence on the ground, it can foster a stronger sense of unity and shared humanity. The flag's presence at the council's HQ would signal to the residents of South Lanarkshire, Scotland, the UK, and even those observing from around the world, that we stand unequivocally with the oppressed. We have shown this solidarity to Ukraine, to LGBT+ groups, to veterans, and to the trans community. It is high time we exhibit the same compassion and understanding toward the people of Palestine.

Reflecting on 2018 UN reports, the situation in Gaza is deteriorating at an alarming rate, with over half of the population - nearly 1 million people - relying on food aid to survive. Such statistics provide a harrowing glimpse into the depth of Palestine's struggle, making our supportive actions even more essential.

Let us use our collective voice to echo across borders and boundaries, to reverberate the message of unity, empathy and solidarity. Please sign this petition to implore South Lanarkshire Council to raise a Palestinian flag at its headquarters, a visible stand for peace and justice with the Palestinian people.
