Urge South Bay Elementary to include my daughter on the cheer team
The Issue
My daughter, a brave young girl with physical and intellectual challenges, has been discriminated against at South Bay Elementary School in Humboldt County. Despite her determination and spirit, she was not allowed to join the basketball cheer team alongside her peers. Born with intellectual and physical visual impairments, and a congenital heart defect, my daughter is a survivor. She also lives with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. It deeply breaks my heart that she is labeled as 'not up to standards' for something that brings her joy and inclusion.
The school's refusal to accommodate her needs not only impedes her personal growth but also goes against the principles of inclusion and equality. Accessibility should be a priority within educational environments, ensuring every child, regardless of their abilities, can participate fully in school activities. It is essential that South Bay Elementary adopts an inclusive mindset where children of all abilities are encouraged to join and supported in extracurricular activities.
Including my daughter and others like her is not just about making them feel good; it’s about nurturing empathy, understanding, and friendship among all students. The value of education extends beyond academics; it's also about cultivating an inclusive community where everyone feels they belong.
By signing this petition, you stand against discrimination and champion for a change that echoes fairness and celebration of diversity. Your signature can press South Bay Elementary School to review their policies concerning participation in extracurricular activities and ensure equal opportunities for all children. Demand that they work collaboratively with parents and experts to create solutions that cater to diverse needs and abilities, offering equal joy and opportunities for all students.
Support our plea for inclusivity—let’s ensure that no child ever feels left out or undervalued again. Please sign this petition to make a meaningful change for my daughter and countless others facing similar situations.
