The Issue

When you think about the future generation and what education means to them, it's hard not to feel deeply invested. I am one of many concerned citizens in the Rock Ridge community who feel passionately about ensuring that our children receive the best possible education.

The recent proposal for Rock Ridge School District to switch to a four-day school week has me and many other parents alarmed. This change would disrupt our children's education consistency. For children, especially those who need additional support, five days of learning contribute significantly to their academic success. Additionally, a shorter week could lead to a decline in daily attention levels, impacting our kids' abilities to grasp essential life and educational skills.

Moreover, schools serve as a refuge for many students who rely on them for more than education— they provide stability and meals. For some children, the secure meals provided at school are essential to their well-being. The financial state of their households renders it difficult to ensure daily meals outside the school. How can we deprive these students of their much-needed food security?

Consider also, the social environment that a consistent school schedule fosters. Schools play a vital role in helping children build social skills and relationships that are crucial for their personal development. Limiting their time at school could deprive them of building the essential personal interactions they're accustomed to.

Furthermore, the impact on hourly and salaried employees within the school district cannot be ignored. Many staff members who work tirelessly to create a better future for our youth could face a loss in income, escalating financial distress within our community.

There are alternative methods to address budget constraints or other considerations without sacrificing our children's educational and social wellbeing. We urge the Rock Ridge School Board to explore other options to achieve financial stability, ensuring no child or staff member is adversely affected.

Please join me in stopping this transition and advocating for our children's futures by supporting this petition to keep a five-day school week at Rock Ridge School District. Sign this petition to help make a difference for our children, our schools, and our community. Together we can ensure a brighter, consistent future for every child in Rock Ridge.
