The Issue

My brother has been incarcerated in the Maguire Detention Facility since just after the last logged visit on June 19, 2025. Since that day, due to non-working elevators, I have been unable to visit him. Communication with loved ones is crucial for the well-being of both the inmates and their families. I am deeply concerned and worried about his welfare, and I am not alone in this concern.

The Maguire Detention Facility, located in Redwood City, serves as a vital institution within our community. However, the prolonged inability of the public to visit inmates, due to something as seemingly simple as non-working elevators, demonstrates a significant oversight by the county authorities. Since the elevators stopped working, the public has been eagerly awaiting an update from the county regarding when visits will resume, yet none have been forthcoming.

The lack of updates leaves families in distress and inmates in uncertainty. Visiting loved ones that are behind bars  is recognized as an important factor that helps reduce recidivism and supports mental health for both parties. According to studies, maintaining strong family ties during incarceration has been shown to significantly improve outcomes both during and after release. Given the importance of family interaction, Redwood City authorities have a responsibility to ensure such access is not hindered.

We urge the Redwood City Board of Supervisors to immediately allocate funds to repair the elevators at the Maguire Detention Facility. This action is not merely about fixing an elevator; it is about human rights and dignity. It is about respecting the needs of both inmates and their families.

Please sign this petition to demand swift action from the county. Let’s show our support for the individuals behind bars who deserve to see and speak to their loved ones.
