Urge Public Officials to Ensure a Thorough Investigation of Nolan Wells' Death
The Issue
Nolan Wells is more than just a name in the headlines; he was an 18-year-old son, friend, and beloved member of the Mississippi community. On July 6, Nolan's body was found on the shores of Horn Island after spending the day boating with friends. His family deserves answers, and our community deserves confidence that every reasonable investigative step is being taken.
Our Demands
This petition calls for the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff John Ledbetter, and the Jackson County District Attorney, Angel Myers McIlrath, to hold regular public press conferences and answer questions. Furthermore, we demand that the Board of Supervisors in Jackson County publicly advocate for this transparency and ensure that county officials provide necessary and timely updates on the case.
This petition also requests that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) assess whether additional state investigative resources or independent assistance are needed ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. We support the Congressional Black Caucus's call for an independent federal review and urge the DOJ and the FBI to respond promptly. We also call upon the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to provide or assess any additional state investigative assistance necessary to ensure every appropriate investigative resource is being utilized.
Questions the Public Deserves Answered
We are not asking investigators to disclose sensitive evidence, confidential witness statements, or information that could jeopardize the investigation or any future prosecution.
The following questions are limited to general investigative processes and status updates that can typically be addressed without compromising the integrity of an active investigation.
How many search warrants have been issued?
How many subpoenas have been issued?
Has an independent audio expert reviewed the Sea Tow recording?
Has an independent video forensic expert reviewed any available videos?
Has every person known to have been with Nolan on July 4th been identified, and have their movements been accounted for?
Have investigators reconstructed and corroborated the witness timeline using objective evidence rather than relying solely on witness recollections?
How many witnesses have been interviewed?
How many follow-up interviews have been conducted?
Are additional agencies assisting? What is their role?
Have all autopsy notes, photographs, documentation, and reports been provided to Nolan's family or their authorized experts? If not, what remains outstanding and what is the legal basis for doing so?
Nolan Wells' case calls for proactive measures and cooperative efforts from all layers of law enforcement and government officials. These actions can illuminate the path towards justice, proving that Nolan Wells is not forgotten and that his legacy, as a son of Mississippi, spurs us to fight valiantly for answers and accountability.
Please sign this petition to show your support and to urge those in positions of power to act swiftly and decisively. Nolan's story is Mississippi's story—let us ensure it is one of justice and resolution.
