Urge Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Experience NZ School Lunches First-hand for a Week
The issue
I am a strong advocate for the health and wellbeing of our children. One vital aspect being, every child deserves to be fed nutritious and decent school lunches. It is deeply saddening when the government neglects this issue, causing our children to sometimes aspire to one day be able to have alternatives such as a marmite sandwich and an apple. This is where our plea comes into play.
We urge Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to partake in an undertaking of consuming randomly selected school lunches for an entire week. Each day, he will visit different schools, sitting with our children, eating with them, and gaining firsthand insight into what the meals are like and why they are important to them.
School lunches play an integral role in a child's life - not only do they provide the energy needed for learning and play, but they can contribute greatly to their overall nutrition intake. According to the Ministry of Health, New Zealand, malnutrition in childhood can adversely affect behaviour, school performance, and cognitive development.
Prime Minister Luxon will have the option of a government meal or is able to choose a marmite sandwich with an apple - if he feels the meal is inadequate. The events will be live-streamed, encouraging transparency and promoting conversation about the current state of school lunches.
By participating in this endeavour, we he would not only be drawing attention to the reality faced by many students but also would show a will to bring about change if necessary. Education and child welfare should be high priorities for our government, starting with what's on our children's plates.
Kindly sign this petition and send a message that it's time for our Prime Minister to take a seat in our school cafeterias. For the sake of our children, for the future of our education, this is an important step. We need your support. Please, sign and share this petition.
