The Issue

Living in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, it's heart-wrenching to think of the impact that any disruption to federal SNAP benefits would have on our community. Many of our local families, seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities depend heavily on these benefits. As a resident whose own family, friends, and neighbors would feel the impact most acutely, I'm deeply concerned about the potential for increased food insecurity and the consequences that may arise from it, including theft, looting, and severe health risks for the most vulnerable.

Currently, there is no emergency response plan or food fund at the city level to provide relief during potential disruptions in SNAP benefits. There isn’t a single city official who took action to prepare our city for this SNAP disruption that will affect our most vulnerable residents. The demand on local food pantries is already high, and an increase in need without adequate preparation will put immense strain on these resources.

I'm urging the Pittsfield City Council and the Mayor to hold an emergency meeting to discuss and prepare for SNAP disruptions. This meeting should initiate actions that include the establishment of a city-level emergency food fund and a full assessment of our city's readiness to handle increased food needs.

Moreover, I ask that the Pittsfield administration and City Council refer this petition to the health department and the human services committee for an urgent review and response plan. City level preparedness can prevent hunger, Protect health and strengthen community trust.
Time is of the essence, and we must act to protect the well-being of our community members, ensuring access to food and essential resources. Please sign this petition to prompt our local officials to take these necessary actions and safeguard the future of our residents!

Despite the looming SNAP disruption, no city official prepared our CITY or their  WARD- WE MUST act now to protect the people who will be most affected.
