Urge Peloton to address trainers' harmful social media conduct
The Issue
I am a proud member of the Jewish community, with close friends and family in Israel, and I have relied on Peloton for fitness motivation and community. However, since October 7, I have been deeply disturbed by the conduct of certain Peloton trainers who have used their social media platforms to post or interact with content that marginalizes Jewish members, including myself. This behavior leaves me feeling unwelcome in classes that should be inclusive and safe for all participants.
Peloton, renowned for its diverse community and motivational trainers, heavily benefits from the mass following its trainers cultivate on social media. This influence directly contributes to driving sales and increasing the brand's presence in the fitness world. But with influence comes responsibility. The recent neglect in addressing trainers' behavior that dehumanizes Israel and, by extension, its Jewish clientele, conflicts with Peloton's stated commitment to community and inclusion.
According to the Anti-Defamation League, instances of antisemitism have been on the rise, with 2022 seeing a 36% increase in antisemitic incidents in the U.S. alone. It's crucial for influential brands like Peloton to clearly stand against such rhetoric and foster an environment of respect and safety for its diverse clientele.
We urge Peloton to take the following actions:
1. Publicly and substantively address the concerns raised by Jewish and Israeli Members and apologize for the inadequate response Members report receiving when they previously brought these concerns to Peloton.
2. Formally review reported instructor social-media conduct under Peloton’s Community Guidelines and impose appropriate consequences.
3. Publicly commit to concrete measures to identify and combat antisemitism, including adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism.
4. Engage StandWithUs as a resource for antisemitism education and training for relevant Peloton team members and leadership.
Peloton must uphold its commitment to diversity by ensuring that no community feels marginalized or unsafe. Signing this petition means advocating for a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone who turns to Peloton for fitness and community. Join me in calling on Peloton to take immediate and decisive action to protect Jewish members and demonstrate solidarity against hate.
