The Issue

In our vibrant community, the growth and development of our young boys through sports is a cornerstone of their journey into adulthood. Youth sports play an essential role in teaching teamwork, discipline, and leadership. As a concerned parent and community member, I see the absence of a freshman baseball team as a missed opportunity for our children.

The Pearl River School District thrives on nurturing well-rounded individuals. However, without a freshman baseball team, many boys miss out on key developmental experiences that come from participating in sports. These early years of high school are formative; they shape not just future athletes, but future citizens and leaders.

Sports programs have been shown to improve physical health, academic performance, and social skills. According to a report by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, students who participate in sports have higher grades, increased confidence, and more socially adept skills. It is crucial that we make every effort to provide these benefits to our young student-athletes.

As our student population continues to grow and interest in athletics remains high, the addition of a dedicated freshman baseball team would provide meaningful opportunities for participation, development, and long-term success - both on and off the field. A freshman boys baseball team would ensure that more young boys remain involved, supported, and engaged rather than discouraged by early cuts caused by limited roster availability. This additional team would provide an inclusive space for all interested athletes, helping them hone their skills while fostering a sense of belonging and school pride.

In reviewing surrounding high schools, the following schools all have a freshmen boys baseball team: Nanuet, Clarkstown North, Clarkstown South, North Rockland, and Suffern. Those districts provide their student athletes an opportunity to develop skills, gain experiences, and build school pride at an early level. It is disappointing, especially given the strong baseball talent in our strong but mighty community that Pearl River does not have a freshman baseball team.

The addition of this team would not merely be an investment in sports, but an investment in the future of our community.
Early experience in structured team environments fosters discipline, leadership, and teamwork - qualities that students carry with them into JV, varsity, and their future academic and professional careers.

It is well recognized that participation in high school athletics is also an asset beyond graduation. When employers evaluate candidates with comparable qualifications, experience on a high school sports team often provides a meaningful edge. It demonstrates the ability to collaborate effectively, persevere through challenge, manage time, and contribute to a common goal - all essential skills in the corporate word and in life. By offering more students the chance to participate in freshman athletics, we invest not only in their physical well=being but also in their character, leadership skills, and future success.

We urge the Pearl River Board of Education to prioritize discussions around this topic and to consider the positive impact an addition of a freshman boys baseball team can have on our youth. Let's give our young boys the chance to learn, grow, and excel through a sport they love.
