Urge Our Missouri Representatives to Support the ADINA Act for Prescription Safety

Urge Our Missouri Representatives to Support the ADINA Act for Prescription Safety
The Issue
The ADINA ACT (H.R. 4263/S.2079 in the 118th Congress) is a bipartisan effort to require all over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription (RX) medications to label if they contain any of the top 9 allergens or gluten-containing grains.
ADINA stands for the Allergen Disclosure In Non-food Articles Act and was introduced on June 21st, 2023 by MN-03 District Congressman Dean Phillips (D) with Co-Sponsors WI-08 District Congressman Mike Gallagher (R), NY-17 District Congressman Mike Lawler (R), NJ-11 District Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D), and CT Senator Richard Blumenthal (D). It has 53 bipartisan co-sponsors, but none from Missouri.
It is also supported by Allergy Advocacy Groups including:
Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE)
Beyond Celiac
National Celiac Association
American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAI)
Allergy Strong
American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders
The FPIES Foundation
The Elijah-Alavi Foundation
Food Equity Initiative
Super T's Mast Cell Foundation
CURED
FAACT (Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team)
Allergy & Asthma Network
Gluten Free Watchdog
Currently, I have Celiac, Fibromyalgia, both MTHFR genes mutations, chronic migraines, am an ambulatory wheelchair user due to my gut pain and fatigue, and my doctors have been testing me for other autoimmune diseases and/or food allergens. I have to be extremely vigilant about what I put into my body due to these issues, especially my mystery gut issues.
Right now, there are no laws requiring prescription and over the counter drug companies to disclose allergen ingredient lists and this puts undue hardship on patients and the occasional sympathetic pharmacist to call drug manufactures to check if these drugs contain allergens or gluten which can cause extreme medical side effects. It is very difficult to find out if a medication includes any gluten or allergen-containing ingredients. In fact, at least one commercial pharmacy expressly states to their pharmacists that they should advise consumers requesting gluten-free medications that there is no definitive way to guarantee that any given drug product is gluten-free. Just imagine having to take a medication knowing that it could contain undisclosed gluten or other allergens that can lead to illness. This bill would help to ensure that the medications we take or give members of our family are safe. Without this legislation, we will continue to wonder if we are unknowingly taking medications that contain allergens or gluten. Worse yet, we may delay a needed medication because we can’t find out if it contains these ingredients. It is important that we act quickly to support this bill for the health of ourselves and loved ones. Even microscopic amounts of gluten or allergens can lead to cascading illnesses in the human body and cause exorbitant medical bills, loss of employment, and other undue hardships of those that care for their ill loved ones.
Let's tell our political representatives in Missouri that this is an important issue that effects their constituents!
