The Issue

As a local resident, my concerns about the use of glyphosate in our community are deeply personal. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans", based on studies linking it to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Although opinions vary regarding its potential harm, glyphosate is often used in combination with other herbicides and surfactants, potentially increasing its toxicity.

The Olivenhain Meeting Hall grounds, a popular location in our town, is frequently treated with glyphosate for weed control. The City of Encinitas has already banned glyphosate in city parks since 2015, reflecting a growing understanding of the need for safer environmental practices.

While the Olivenhain Meeting Hall grounds may not be owned by the city, this doesn't diminish the importance of adhering to environmental safety protocols. Following the lead of many cities in the state, including Encinitas, Olivenhain can also pioneer the use of organic ground control for weed management.

Our community has a right to public spaces that do not expose us or our environment to potential harm. The wellbeing of present and future generations hinges on the decisions we make today. Although the risks associated with glyphosate are not definitive, I believe it's vital to err on the side of caution.

I am asking the Olivenhain Town Council to uphold the health of its citizens, our environment, and our beautiful local grounds by prohibiting the application of glyphosate and focusing instead on organic ground control methods. Please sign this petition and lend your voice to this crucial issue.
