The Issue

Nestled in the heart of Okaloosa County lies a precious jewel of biodiversity – a 40.83-acre parcel of land brimming with life. This land, which bears the identification number 30-1S-23-0000-0002-0000, is currently slated for development, a decision that threatens to erase the rich tapestry of life it sustains. Within its boundaries reside several threatened and endangered species, each playing a vital role in our ecosystem's balance. Yet, they face the brink of habitat loss, a plight they can't withstand on their own.

People Protecting Poquito Bayou, along with other community advocates, calls upon Okaloosa County to seize this opportunity to purchase the land and save it from irreversible development. Transforming this area into a nature preserve and space for passive recreation stands as a beacon of hope for not just the local residents, but also for the flourishing tourism industry which thrives on the county's natural beauty. Establishing a preserve offers eco-tourism opportunities, bringing economic benefits while preserving the essence of our environment.

The environmental importance of this land cannot be understated. Beyond the flora and fauna, this area provides natural flood control, improves air and water quality, and offers serene moments of reflection away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. It's a resource for educational field trips and research, helping future generations appreciate and learn about their natural world.

With your support, we can urge the county to prioritize long-term ecological gains over short-term development profits. Our community and the fragile ecosystems that enrich our lives stand to lose much without immediate action. We must act responsibly and cherish what nature offers by safeguarding it for our children and grandchildren.

We request Okaloosa County officials to purchase this land using local Tourist Development Council funds along with grants from the State of Florida.

Join us in urging the Okaloosa County officials to purchase this land, not just for today, but for the bright, green future it promises. Sign the petition to show your support and help turn the tide for Poquito Bayou.
