Urge Oak Island to Revise Sign Ordinance and Reject Special Exemption for Digital Billboards

The Issue

I live off of Long Beach Road in Oak Island, North Carolina. Our beach community is under threat with a proposal allowing massive digital billboards. The aesthetic character of our neighborhood could be irreversibly marred if the Town Council approves the Cape Fear Jetport's request for such an exemption.

We, residents of Oak Island, strongly believe in the importance of aligning local regulations with broader town planning. The current sign ordinance needs to become more compatible with Oak Island's comprehensive land use plan, representing our community's shared vision. A special exemption for oversized digital billboards, especially near residential areas like ours, is a significant deviation from this vision.

According to the Scenic America organization, such large digital billboards not only disrupt the aesthetic look of a place but also reduce the value of nearby properties (Scenic America, 2017). This presents a risk for homeowners like us, who have invested in their properties and appreciate the value of a visually pleasing neighborhood.

Therefore, we urge the Oak Island Planning Board and Town Council to put our community first. Revise the sign ordinance to ensure it aligns better with the comprehensive land use plan and reject the special exemption application for the Cape Fear Jetport's expansive digital billboards.

Stand with us to protect our town's character and future. Sign this petition today.
