I recently faced a parent's worst nightmare when a commonplace over-the-counter medication, Diphenhydramine, led to a medical emergency involving my child. This frightening experience highlighted how easily accessible and potentially dangerous such medications can be when misused, especially by young individuals.

Diphenhydramine, an active ingredient in medications like Benadryl, is commonly used for allergies, but its sedative effects can lead to misuse and overdose. This issue is not isolated to my family; many households are unaware of the potential dangers lurking in their medicine cabinets. A safeguard against this kind of misuse is crucial.

We are urging the City of North Port to take action by passing a resolution in support of behind-the-counter sales of diphenhydramine products. This would mean such medications are still available but would require interaction with a pharmacy professional, thereby creating a critical barrier to deter misuse by teenagers.

Additionally, we call on North Port to work with state and federal leaders, pharmacies, and retailers to implement and advocate policies that enhance safety measures around these medications. These actions would strike a balance between accessibility for those in need and safety for our vulnerable youth.
