Urge NEA to Recognize Jewish American Heritage Month

The Issue

As a Jewish American, I’ve recently felt the absence of recognition in spaces meant to honor diversity. Despite Jewish Americans’ deep-rooted contributions to education, civil rights, science, the arts, and more, our legacy too often goes unacknowledged.

The National Education Association (NEA) rightly celebrates many heritage months through its Read Across America platform—honoring Black, Arab American, Hispanic, Indigenous, AAPI, Women’s, and Immigrant communities. These observances enrich our classrooms and affirm the identities of countless students. But one community is notably missing: Jewish Americans.

In a time of rising antisemitism, education is one of the most powerful tools we have to foster understanding and empathy. Including Jewish American Heritage Month in NEA’s Read Across America calendar is more than symbolic—it’s a vital step toward inclusion and equity.

Let’s urge the NEA to reflect the full diversity of our nation’s story.

Sign this petition and help ensure Jewish American voices and histories are rightfully honored in our schools.

Together, we can build a more inclusive future—one student, one story at a time
