The residents of the Fairways and Beau Rivage service area - New Hanover County, NC are currently facing high water and sewer bills from the Aqua Water Company. This financial burden is causing undue stress and hardship for many households.  Recently Aqua increased per gallon rates from $.00155 to $.00289 for water and $.00183 to $.0053 for sewer resulting in a total rate increase of over 240%.  Much of the water used during the warmer months goes toward irrigating our yards and does not enter the sewer system yet we are being charged as if it was going down the drain.  Although Aqua lowered the minimum sewer charge as promised they raised the rates on a per gallon basis almost 300%.

The North Carolina Utility Commission has the power to regulate these rates and ensure fair pricing for all consumers. We believe that it is time for them to step in and review the current pricing structure of Aqua Water Company.

In 2018, a report by Food & Water Watch found that private water companies charge 59% more than public utilities (Food & Water Watch, 2018). This discrepancy highlights a significant issue with our current system and strengthens our call for action.
