Urge MSU to Source 25% of Food Locally by 2030

The Issue

Michigan State University (MSU) has long been a beacon of innovation, education, and community leadership in Lansing, MI. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and community development, MSU has a unique opportunity to set a precedent in sourcing food sustainably. We propose that MSU commits to sourcing 25% of its food from local, sustainable farms by the year 2030.

Adopting this initiative would not only support the local economy and Michigan farmers but also significantly reduce the university's environmental impact. The transportation of food from distant locations contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. By turning to local sources, MSU can shrink its carbon footprint substantially.

Investing in local farms guarantees fresher produce, cuts down on packaging waste, and generates jobs within our community. This change aligns with global movements towards sustainability that focus on using localized food systems as a means to battle climate change and promote economic resilience.

Besides these benefits, adopting local sourcing is a step towards educational excellence. MSU can incorporate these practices into its curriculum, teaching students about sustainable agriculture, ethical consumption, and responsible environmental stewardship. These learning opportunities will equip the next generation of leaders with the knowledge and experience needed to tackle the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Join us in calling on Michigan State University to commit to purchasing 25% of its food from local, sustainable sources by 2030. With your support, we can ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for the MSU community and the greater Lansing area. Please sign this petition to urge MSU to take the lead in sustainable food sourcing and make a substantial impact on our community and the environment.
